Online Encyclopedias

To gather general background information on your topic and to become familiar with the scope and issues embodied by your topic, many times it is profitable to start with material contained in general encyclopedias.  The Luce Library has access to a number of electronic encyclopedias. These are:
  • Encyclopedia Britannica Online
    EB Online includes the complete encyclopedia as well as Merriam-Webster´s Collegiate Dictionary and the Britannica Book of the Year. EB Online also offers an Internet Directory that includes more than 130,000 links to Web sites selected, rated and reviewed by Britannica authors.
  • Grolier Online
    Grolier Online is an electronic resource that contains three separate encyclopedia collections. All three encyclopedias can be searched together or separately. Searching the comprehensive collection is beneficial for initial information gathering.
Encyclopedia Americana Online
This online encyclopedia will provide full-text articles and links to related encyclopedia articles. Authoritative web sites are supplied as well as journal articles from selected EBSCO periodicals.

Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia
Full text articles, web links and journal articles from EBSCO selected periodicals are available as well as image, audio and video files.

Ebsco Academic Search Premiere
Provides access to articles from scholarly journals.


Lexis/Nexis
Access to the current news and to a comprehensive news archive; includes full text for 65 leading U.S. and international newspapers (Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Dutch); provides access to the New York Times and to the Washington Post dating back to 1980.
Also provides transcripts of major TV and radio broadcasts and constantly updated wire service reports.
