Library Catalog

1. Open the Brooks School Library catalog by going to the library page:

http://library.brooksschool.org

or by clicking on this link directly.

2. Fill in search box with the term ÒcreationÓ

You will see that the catalog is searching only to match this term; music CDs and books about Social Security come up along with more helpful books.  This screen will tell you the call number and availability of a book. Òcopy available in stacksÓ means it is on the shelve and ready to take out.

3. Try search term Òendangered species.Ó You will notice some call number prefixes

-REF means it is a reference book, shelved on the ground floor and no available to check out

-SALT means it is part of the Saltonstall Collection, which is a special area on the Upper Level, and all books about the environment. Please ask if you donÕt know where this area is.

-XX means that the book is not fully processed yet, we are buying it but it has not arrived yet or doesnÕt have all its stickers and stamps.

Electronic Resources

1. Go back to the library page, and right below the catalog link click on Òelectronic resourcesÓ.

2. Select the first choice ÒEbscoHostÓ

3. Select the first choice ÒEbscoHost WebÓ

4. Select the first choice ÒAdvance Placement Source.Ó

This is a database that contains over 5000 journals. Since a journal comes out 12 times a year, and has about 10 articles in it each time, and this database goes back at least 10 years we are talking about a minimum of 6 million articles.

5. Again, put the term Òendangered speciesÓ in the search box.

Look first at the number of results! It should be in the blue band above the results.  More than 50 or so articles is probably too many results to look through. One way to reduce the number is to look at the subject suggestions on the left of the screen, try clicking on Òwildlife conservationÓ and see what that does to the results.
